The Impact of Health Tax: A Cab Driver's Tale from Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh India

In the picturesque town of Dharamshala, nestled in the Himalayan foothills, Nada India Team encountered a cab driver with a story that unraveled the complex relationship between affordability, individual choices, and the potential impact of health taxes on tobacco consumption. Cab Driver's Profile: In 1995, this cab driver embarked on his journey as a taxi driver, and with it began his journey with tobacco. Starting with cigarettes, he later transitioned to bidis, driven by economic considerations. Currently, he smokes four to five bidis or cigarettes daily, spending approximately Rs.40-50 on his smoking habit. Financial Impact: The cab driver's narrative sheds light on the direct correlation between the cost of tobacco and his consumption habits. The affordability factor plays a pivotal role in shaping his choices. If tobacco prices were to decrease, he expressed the intention to smoke more. Conversely, a rise in prices would compel him to either switch entirely to bidis or ...

Empowering Children: The Significance of the JJ Act in Restricting Tobacco Access

The call to action extends to the imperative need for strengthening tobacco control laws, such as the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). These laws must not only be robust but also inclusive, specifically designed to shield children from the insidious marketing tactics employed by the tobacco industry. Ayesha's words echo the sentiment that children deserve a safe environment, free from the influence of harmful substances. In the relentless fight against substance abuse, particularly concerning children, the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act emerges as a crucial ally. As we navigate the intricate challenges posed by tobacco products and drug use, our attention is drawn to the transformative role played by dedicated members of the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) hailing from Telangana, Odisha, and Uttarakhand. Currently undergoing training at the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) in Delhi, these individuals stand at the forefront of safegua...

Why are so many young people dying of heart attacks?

Tobacco menace :An avoidable catastrophe

Quitters are the real winners... Quit Tobacco Now!

The saying goes that “quitters never win,” but in the case of tobacco, quitters are the real winners. Nada India Foundation is trying to help tobacco users quit by providing the support, services, and policies that enable people to quit. Big Tobacco marketing campaigns by Philip Morris, British American, Japan Tobacco, etc. make it even more challenging for smokers to quit. In our efforts, we urge policymakers to ban all Tobacco Marketing and to adopt policies to discourage tobacco use. We believe that cigarette ads seek to sell more and foster an acceptance in people's minds that smoking is natural. What the ads are showing is important. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that the countries with a total ban on tobacco advertising report a seven percent drop in the consumption of tobacco products. The COVID19 pandemic has encouraged millions of tobacco users to say they want to quit. There has never been a better time to quit tobacco, and our commitment to helping t...

Meaningful engagement of Students and Young people to combat the threat posed by the tobacco industry #TobaccoExposed

EXPERT OPINION TOBACCO- A BIGGER KILLER THAN CORONAVIRUS? Jun , 2020,  Prof. T K Thoma The day before yesterday [Sunday, 31May], the annual World No Tobacco Day was observed by the World Health Organization [WHO] and member countries. Two significant points may be pointed out. First, this year’s World No Tobacco Day coincides with the coronavirus pandemic and second, the United States, one of the major funders of WHO has quit the UN body. Incidentally, the US is home for some of the largest cigarette manufacturers in the world like Philip Morris and Altria. The theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day is “Protecting Youth from Industry Manipulation and preventing them from Tobacco and Nicotine Use”. This may be a deviation from the usual generalized and victim-centred themes for the Day since the starting of this annual Day in 1987. The WHO has taken courage to take the bull by the horn by confronting the tobacco industry’s belligerent promotion of campai...

We need to VOTE for Healthcare in India...

The right to health is a fundamental right and not a favour doled out by successive governments at the Centre and the state. With elections being held in the five states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur this year, it’s time people used their vote to demand their right to health. A déjà vu moment from Odisha this week once again put the spotlight on the unacceptable gaps in India’s public health delivery. Gati Dhibar carried his dead five-year-old daughter Sumi on his shoulder for 15 km from the Palahada Community Health Centre (CHC) in the Angul district in Odisha to his village for cremation after he was couldn’t get a hearse at the hospital. Too poor to pay for transport, Dhibar’s plight echoes two similar incidents in Odisha last year – one in Malkangiri district where a man walked six km with his seven-year-old daughter’s body after the ambulance taking them to the hospital left them midway after learning that the girl had died, and the other in the Kala...

Various practical issues like challenges faced during rehab to quit smoking and drinking or quitting drugs to develop  drug free environment were discussed with ease.Educating girl child and gender equality too was considered relevant when children suggested that girls too have a right to equal opp...
