Good Health a National Priority and Tobacco Control

Ri ght to life under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution has been liberally interpreted to mean the right to live with dignity and decency. Take your Rights and Do your Duties!  Jyotsna Roy  When I was a child I took two blotters from my Grandfather’s table in the district hospital. Blotters were used for drying ink from fountain pens. These pieces were about 4” by 6” with the rough pink blotting paper on one side and a picture on the other.  Generally these were distributed as IEC material for products being promoted. So, one blotter had the picture of a black pair of lungs and the other had an almost blue heart. I asked my Grandfather questions while trying to understand the pictures.  He told me that the tree kind of picture was a pair of lungs that has numerous small pockets in which old breath is cleaned by oxygen. How did the black tar get into the lungs? I asked. I knew tar because the road inside the hospital was being coated with Coal tar to make access ea...

All episodes of life leave us with a sense of “zilch” meaning “the beginning.”Nada India turns 20

This article comes from Guidepoints News from NADA  Spring 2021  Issue.  Suneel Vatsyayan:  Year 2020 is important for Nada India for two reasons. First, this was the year Nada India completed 20 years of its existence. It was Dr. Michael O. Smith who introduced me to the word nada, a Spanish word meaning nothing. In Hindi, nada means primordial sound. During his numerous visits to India, we discussed how a patient is smarter than a therapist, and a virus is smarter than the vaccine, and students are smarter than the teacher – they all change faster than our interventions. This causes a gap and increases the service barriers. Thus, the policy and program focus needs to shift from disease control and management to primordial prevention and wellbeing. And so, Dr. Smith invited me to set up Nada India Foundation to promote barrier-free drug rehabilitation services and community wellness for behavioral health. Secondly, 2020 was the year of the Covid-19 pandemic that hel...

Healthy Campus: 22% college students skip their breakfast

Approximately 22% college students skip their breakfast and 80% habitually take snacks at least once a day.  *Dr. Atul Pratap Singh India needs solutions to several challenges that have damaged overall health and wellbeing of the people. These challenges are related to health, harmful effects of unhealthy food advertisements and eating habits, impurity of air, water and soil and vulnerability of regions to climate change. Human health and climate change should be an integral part of sustainability practices in the universities and college campuses as the youth may become the ambassador of change and development. Hence, we need to focus towards incorporating health, specifically health related to eating habits and eco-friendly environment into the sustainability movement taking place in higher educational institutions.  It is expected that universities and college will take initiatives, become front liners and set the goals for environmental sustainability to launch ...

Social Work, Public Health, Inclusiveness and AtmaNirbharata

The erstwhile health policy through an incremental approach had identified the need of new investments in the public health sector. It had also created a vision of investment of 2.5% of Indian GDP for the health sector by 2025 to create a self reliant and  Atmanirbhar bharat . States  were directed to spend more than 8% of their state budget for the public health sector.  *Anandajit Goswami, PhD Good Health Champion Awardee  Recent NSSO data shows that India has 20 health workers per 20,000 people. As per WHO standard, the minimum number should be 22. While India was earlier poised at 19 and has now increased to 20, we still have not achieved the milestone of 22. Moreover, though, more than 70% of these people are in rural India, only 30% of the health work- force is in the rural sector.  Majority of the health work- force is also employed in the private sector. The work force comprises nurses and they are spread over a wide range of health relat...

Are you involved in a volunteering activity? If not, it might be a good idea to start now.

Living Positively Volunteering: The difference it makes to your mental health - Dr Edward Hoffman Research shows its health benefits across different life stages Are you involved in a volunteering activity? If not, it might be a good idea to start now.    Research increasingly points to its benefits for personal wellbeing. It’s no accident that science journalists are touting this impact with  article titles such as “To feel good, do good.” The link between wellbeing and volunteering is substantial, beginning from  adolescence  and continuing all the way into old age. Under the banner of  positive youth development , studies show the positive effects of volunteering on teens. It translates to a lower likelihood of pregnancy or  drug use , and positive  academic , psychological, and occupational outcomes than non-volunteering peers. Meaningful engagement of Students and Young people to combat the threat posed by the tobacco industry #TobaccoExposed

EXPERT OPINION TOBACCO- A BIGGER KILLER THAN CORONAVIRUS? Jun , 2020,  Prof. T K Thoma The day before yesterday [Sunday, 31May], the annual World No Tobacco Day was observed by the World Health Organization [WHO] and member countries. Two significant points may be pointed out. First, this year’s World No Tobacco Day coincides with the coronavirus pandemic and second, the United States, one of the major funders of WHO has quit the UN body. Incidentally, the US is home for some of the largest cigarette manufacturers in the world like Philip Morris and Altria. The theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day is “Protecting Youth from Industry Manipulation and preventing them from Tobacco and Nicotine Use”. This may be a deviation from the usual generalized and victim-centred themes for the Day since the starting of this annual Day in 1987. The WHO has taken courage to take the bull by the horn by confronting the tobacco industry’s belligerent promotion of campai...
