37th Annual conference of IPS-NZ was organized on 27th&28th October 2012 at Sri Ganganagar by Dr, Roop Sidana (chairman) and Dr. Rajeev Aggarwal (secretary)with guidance of  Executive Council of North zone. The venue Pagoda resorts was situated away from the city in picturesque cotton fields had well- furnished accommodation with beautiful lush green lawns.
Around 250 delegates and 35 post-graduate residents were registered from different cities & medical colleges in the conference. Theme of the conference “Addiction: Family and society” was appropriate to the time and the needs of the residents of the border area. Galaxy of speakers and faculties for various scientific sessions were of national repute. Experts not only from North but South, West & Central zones were participated and added grace to the conference.
The conference was inaugurated by IPS President Dr. Roy Abraham Kallivayalil, after a welcome dance by children of Good Shephered Public School, he threw some light on an important issue ‘Farmers suicide in India ‘and prevention strategies for the same in his Key note address. Dr.P.D.Garg took over the presidential charge and shared about “changing faces of Indian families”. The 9 papers were read in award sessions for various awards had tough competition.
Three symposiums and two workshops were conducted in the two days conference. The theme symposium‘Addiction: family and society ‘was moderated by Dr. Shiv Gautam, who shared the new policy of Rajasthan Government for prevention strategies of drug abuse. Eminent speakers & Senior Psychiatrist Dr. S.D. Sharma told about impact of alcohol on families and society. Mr. Sunil Vatsayan, Psychiatric social worker Chairman ,Nada India and former director of Navjyoti,Delhi Police Foundation Nasha Mukti Sansthan from Delhi, talked about the burden of untreated addicts on the society and emphasized the need for integrated approach to find out means to reach the unreached addicts. Dr. DhaneshGupta, Consultant psychiatrist from Singapore discussed about the role of family and community in the treatment of drug addiction.
The symposium on “Management of Schizophrenia beyond Pharmacology” was moderated by Dr.Vivek Kirpekar and Dr., Vidyadhar Watve. The frontier in the field of rehabilitation Dr. T. Murali from Bangalore discussed about psychosocial aspects of management and emphasized the need to have training at various levels which should be tailor-made to the needs of Indian patients. Professor R.C. Jiloha from MAMC New Delhi gave an elaborate talk on compliance and strategies to improve treatment of chronic schizophrenics. Dr. K.K.Verma presented on cognitive aspects of management of Schizophrenia and discussed new therapeutic approaches in cognitive remediation.
Dr. Gagandeep Singh from DMC Ludhiana delivered a lecture on “Epilepsy- Psychiatric aspects” in his guest lecture. First time a workshop on research methodology was organized by team of PGI, Chandigarh for the postgraduate students for which around 35 PG’s were provided with free accommodation and registration by organizers. Dr. Debashish Basu, Dr. Ritesh Aggarwal and Dr. Pramod Aggarwal provided the opportunity for active participation and made the workshop interactive for young participants. The workshop would definitely be helpful in conducting and publishing research.
A souvenir released on this occasion had blessings of Chief Minister, Health minister, MLA, MP, IPS president and other dignitories. It also contained articles by senior psychiatrists and experts like Dr. N. N. Wig and Dr. Shiv Gautam.
At the end of the first day a vote of thanks was given by Dr. Rajeev Aggarawl and a gala dinner was organized in the lush green & picturesque lawns of resort with live music and opportunity for social-interaction and entertainment.
The symposium on “Media and Mental health” at Prerna Deaddiction & Rehabilitation center was attended not only by the delegates but also by the local media personnel. Dr. R. C. Jiloha moderated the symposium and shared his expert opinion about the dual relationship between media, mental health and society .Dr. Roop Sidana & Dr. Rajeev Gupta presented facts about role of media in substance abuse prevention. Mr. Krishan Brahspaty represented media and gave response from media.
 Post conference workshop was organized by the specialty section of IPS on substance use disorders was organized under the expert guidance of  Dr. D. Basu, Dr. AtulAmbekar and Dr. N. Subodh from AIIMS provided the opportunity to learn clinical skills by different role plays. Several physicians and general practitioners attended the workshop.
