Building a Healthier Campus: Reflections on the World Social Work Day 2025 at BPSMV, Haryana

On World Social Work Day 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe, healthy, and empowering campus where well-being is the foundation of education

Nada India Foundation extends heartfelt gratitude to
Prof. Manju Panwar, Head of the Department of Social Work at BPSMV Sonipat, Haryana, and the esteemed faculty members for organizing an impactful Orientation Workshop on Drug Prevention on March 19, 2025. This event served as a vital platform to engage students and stakeholders in meaningful discussions on the pressing issue of substance use prevention.

Acknowledging Peer-Led Drug Prevention Efforts

We deeply appreciate the recognition of Nada India Foundation and Ankush Foundation for their sustained efforts in mobilizing a peer-led drug rehabilitation center network. Over decades, Nada India, in collaboration with Vidya Lead Academy, has worked towards developing and implementing a peer-based model for drug and NCD prevention. This approach has empowered individuals with lived experiences to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice in drug prevention and recovery.

Strengthening Peer-Led Initiatives through Collaboration

The workshop underscored the critical need to integrate peer-led drug rehabilitation programs within the Healthy Campus initiative. To address this, Vidya Lead Academy, as a knowledge partner of Nada India, proposes collaborating with BPSMV to establish a certificate course in peer education and counseling. This initiative will:

  • Equip social workers, peer counselors, and managers with specialized training in drug prevention.

  • Strengthen evidence-based and practice-oriented interventions.

  • Provide early intervention strategies, addressing substance use before it escalates into severe addiction or NCDs.

World Social Work Day 2025: A Resounding Success

The World Social Work Day celebration on March 19, 2025, was further enriched by the presence of Prof. Sanjai Bhatt, President of NAPSWI, who addressed students on the importance of drug prevention in social work practice. This event highlighted:

  • The role of social workers in empowering communities and addressing social challenges.

  • The link between substance use, academic performance, and mental health.

  • The importance of mental well-being and preventive social work strategies in higher education institutions.

Addressing Emerging Concerns: The Role of Social Workers

During the event, Mr. Suneel Vatsyayan led an insightful session covering:

  • Community concerns, including a tragic incident where a drug-dependent individual resorted to violence due to financial constraints.

  • The role of social workers in early intervention and creating safe, supportive environments.

  • The power of peer education, showcasing successful peer-led interventions in other institutions.

The Six-Month Peer Leadership Plan

To build on these discussions, Nada India proposes a structured six-month plan to establish a sustainable peer educator-to-peer leadership model at BPSMV:

  1. Testing Phase (Initial Two Months)

    • Recruit 40 student peer educators.

    • Develop data collection tools & assessment frameworks.

  2. Launching Phase (During National Social Work Week)

    • Officially launch the certificate course in peer education and counseling.

    • Establish a network of 500 peer educators and supporters.

  3. Scaling Up & Sustainability

    • Integrate peer-led initiatives into the university’s Healthy Campus framework.

    • Promote collaboration among students, faculty, and social work professionals.

Moving Forward: A Commitment to a Healthy Campus

By integrating social work principles with drug prevention strategies, BPSMV aims to create a safe, resilient, and health-focused campus community. This will:

  • Enhance peer support networks.

  • Raise awareness about substance use prevention.

  • Promote a collaborative approach involving faculty, students, and social work professionals.

Looking Ahead: A Shared Vision

On World Social Work Day 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe, healthy, and empowering campus where well-being is the foundation of education. Nada India Foundation is eager to take the next steps in formalizing this partnership with BPSMV and ensuring that this initiative has a lasting impact.

We will meet again, where possibilities await and dreams take flight.
